[Am]The marchin' band came [D]down along main street
[G]The soldier blues fell in behind
[Am]I looked across and th[D]ere I saw Billy
[Em]Waiting to go and j[G]oin the line
[Am]And with her head u[D]pon his shoulder
[Am]His young and lovely[D] fiancee
[Am]From where I stood [D]I saw she was cryin'
[Am]And through her tears [D]I heard her say

[G]Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a [Am]fool with your life
[Am7]Billy, don't be a hero, come back and [G]make me your wife
And as [G]Billy started[G7] to go,
She said [Am]keep your pretty [Cm]head low
[G]Billy, don't be [D]hero, come back to [G]me.

[Am]The soldier blues were [D]trapped on a hillside
[G]The battle raging all around
[Am]The sargeant cried, &q[D]uot; We've got to hang on boys!"
[Em]We've got to hold thi[G]s piece of ground
[Am]I need a volunteer [D]to ride up,
[Am]And bring us back s[D]ome extra men,
[Am]And Billy's hand was[D] up in a moment
[Am]Forgettin' all the w[D]ords she said...she s[D7]aid

[G]That told how Billy died that day
[Am]The letter said that [D]he was a hero
[Em]She should be proud he die[G]d that way
[Em]I heard she threw the [D]letter a[G]way
