Intro: [E] , [E/A] , [E/F#] (x2)

[VERSE 1]
There's only[E] one light on in the house
And that's th[E/A]e light up in the hall
And it'[E/F#]s shining on the back of my head
And I'm[E] concentrating hard on th[E/A]e cigarette
To the ashtray from the[E/F#] ashtray back to my lips

[CHORUS]
So I[E] lean up from my easy chair
I[E/A] rub my three-day beard
[E/F#]And give that thousand yard stare
As I re[E]call all the time an[E/A]d money w[E/F#]e spent
Before I became irre[E]levant

Interlude: [E/A] , [E/F#] , [E] , [E/A] , [E]/[F#]

[VERSE 2]
So the [E]straw-dog threw rock-salt
And the[E/A] precious girl took a bow and walked
[E/F#]As I ran my finger over the screen door
Yeah [E]every kiss has reeked of betrayal
Since m[E/A]y heroine jumped the guardrail
And[E/F#] decided who she wanted to be once more

[CHORUS]
Now[E] every night I'm paralyzed
By the[E/A] fear of rope burns and morning light
[E/F#]And the smell of wet cement
Since I became irrel[E]evant

Interlude: [E/A] , [E/F#] , [E] , [E/A] , [E]/[F#]

[VERSE 3]
Now [E]memory is just a flash flood
A[E/A] thick and black sticky mud
And[E/F#] heartache it's like a breaking bone

[VERSE 4]
It was always[E] twelve hours on a missionary line
[E/A]I think I would've spared some time
But I didn'[E/F#]t I never went home

[CHORUS]
Now it o[E]ccurs to me like blinds un-drawn
Or a[E/A] bullet from a shotgun
[E/F#]That she knew long ago what it meant
To feel irre[E]levant [E/A] [E/F#]

Last Verse:
Now I'm [E]always smilin[E/A]g crying

And hiding my intent
Since I became irrel[E]evant

Outro: [E] , [E/A] , [E/F#] (x3) [E]
